Town of Vienna Employees Save Elderly Dog in Sinkhole
Vienna police officers responded on Sept. 14 at around 12:24 p.m. to try and free an elderly golden retriever that had fallen into a sinkhole.
The dog, known as “J.R.,” had fallen into a sinkhole near a drainage pipe opening in the 500 block of Walker Street, S.W. He had become trapped and unable to free himself, police said. A neighbor located the dog and called police.
Officers called for assistance from Vienna Parks and Recreation Department employees and together they were able to free J.R. After removing surrounding dirt while protecting the dog from the work tools, employees were able to lift and assist him out of the hole.
J.R. then was placed on a dog stretcher and transported to the HOPE Center for treatment. He was released the same day and is doing fine, police said.
